"Music Matters" Special License Plate Bill Introduced

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, WED., JANUARY 13, 2010
CONTACT: Danille Turissini,
Board Member & Legislative Liaison, Music Aid Northwest
(360) 301-4134 or dani@musicaidnorthwest.org

OLYMPIA—Music Aid Northwest announced today the introduction of House Bill 2763, creating a "Music Matters" special license plate. The bill, sponsored by Washington State Representatives Geoff Simpson, 47th Legislative District, and Mike Sells, 38th District, would create a perpetual funding source for music programs in Washington schools.

According to Music Aid Northwest President Bob Tomberg, "We have been working on this project for a few years now and we"re very excited about Representative Simpson"s leadership and interest in supporting the effort. Studies show that kids who are involved with music do better academically while developing a rewarding skill that they will benefit from for the rest of their lives. We have always had a vision to help bring music to as many kids as possible and we see this as a major step forward in keeping music programs in Washington alive and thriving," he said.

The bill, if passed, would make available a special Music Matters license plate similar to other specialty plates currently available in the state. People who purchase the plates will be contributing to music education and making a public statement about how important music is to education.

Notable drummer Alan White (Yes, Plastic Ono Band), who serves on the Music Aid Northwest Board of Directors, was thrilled to have the support of Simpson and Sells. "Geoff Simpson and Mike Sells really stepped up for the kids of Washington State. When we discussed this project with them they thought it was an excellent way to help fund music education. The program will generate much needed funds on a voluntary basis. Their leadership will be instrumental in making this a reality," reported White.

Music Aid Northwest, as a charitable 501(c)3 organization, has sponsored several benefit events over the past several years throughout Washington and has most recently partnered with the Washington State Music Education Association in order to combine efforts in making this project a reality.

More information about Music Aid Northwest and the Music Matters Special License Plate project can be found at www.MusicAidNorthwest.org or www.MusicPlates.org.
